Veteran benefits help vets, and their families purchase homes, pursue higher education, launch careers, and maintain good health. Veterans who are at least 10% disabled due to any diseases or injuries incurred while serving in the military are eligible for monthly payments from the VA.

The disability benefits vary from case to case, since every individual has different needs and circumstances.

Wilkerson, Jones, and Wilkerson, Personal Injury Attorneys, published a new blog explaining the types of qualifying veteran injuries, how to file for your claim, and what you can do if you get a low disability rating.

Applying for Veterans Disability Benefits

You can apply for veteran's disability if you are at least 10% disabled due to your time serving the country. Here are the various ways you can file for disability benefits.

  • Apply online: You can submit an online application for veterans' disability benefits using the Veterans Online Application (VONAPP).
  • Apply by mail: Fill out the Application for Veterans Compensation and/or Pension, available on the VA Forms website, and mail it to your neighborhood VA office to submit your application.
  • On the phone: To apply over the phone, dial 800-827-1000. Call 800-829-4833 on the TDD line if you have hearing or speech difficulties. Dial 412-395-6272 if you reside outside the United States.
  • Apply physically: You can go to your neighbourhood VA office to apply.

How much would you get?

The amount of veteran disability payments you get is determined by your disability rating, which varies from 10% to 100%. You can also get compensated in some situations that are unrelated to events involving military service. For instance, you can get a temporary 100% rating if you undergo medical treatment for a service-connected condition.

You may also be eligible for additional pay if you suffer from severe impairments, experience limb loss, have a spouse, kids, or parents who are dependent on you, or have a spouse who is disabled.

Get help with your VA disability ratings

Unfortunately, the VA makes it difficult for claimants with disabilities to obtain the benefits they require and deserve. The first-time clearance rate often hovers around 35%, and even when claims are allowed, the ratings given are usually unfairly low.

As a disabled veteran, it’s vital that you get adequate benefits to take care of yourself and your dependents. You can appeal your disability rating if you are not happy with it.
